ISO 9001 Checklist: The Complete Guide to Getting Certified in 2026

ISO 9001 Checklist: The Complete Guide to Getting Certified in 2026
An ISO 9001 checklist turns a long standard into a list of things you can tick off: what to define, what to document, what to measure and what to show your auditor. Use it to find gaps early, plan the work and walk into your certification audit knowing nothing is missing. This guide gives you the clause-by-clause list, the documents auditors expect and the steps to certification.
An ISO 9001 checklist lists the requirements of clauses 4 to 10 (context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement) as yes/no questions, so you can check what your quality management system already covers and what is still missing before a certification audit.
What is an ISO 9001 checklist?
ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management systems (QMS). Its requirements sit in clauses 4 to 10, and each clause contains several "shall" statements an auditor can test. An ISO 9001 checklist rewrites those statements as practical questions, such as "Have you defined the scope of the QMS?" or "Do you keep records of internal audits?"
You can use one in three ways: as a gap analysis before you start, as a project plan while you build the system, and as an internal audit tool before the certification body arrives.
ISO 9001 checklist by clause (4 to 10)
Work through the clauses in order. If you can answer yes to every item, with a document or record to prove it, you are ready for the audit.
- Clause 4Context. Have you identified interested parties, defined the QMS scope and mapped your processes?
- Clause 5Leadership. Has top management approved a quality policy and assigned roles and responsibilities?
- Clause 6Planning. Have you assessed risks and opportunities and set measurable quality objectives?
- Clause 7Support. Are resources, competence, awareness, communication and documented information under control?
- Clause 8Operation. Do you control customer requirements, suppliers, delivery and nonconforming outputs?
- Clause 9Performance. Do you track customer satisfaction, run internal audits and hold management reviews?
- Clause 10Improvement. Do you record nonconformities, fix root causes and improve continually?
Each clause breaks down into dozens of detailed questions. For the audit-specific version, see our ISO 9001 internal audit checklist guide.
ISO 9001 checklist: documents and records auditors ask for
ISO 9001 requires "documented information": some you maintain as documents and some you retain as records. Tick these off before the audit.
Documents to maintain
- Scope of the QMS
- Quality policy
- Quality objectives
- Process and procedure documents
Records to retain
- Competence and training
- Calibration of measuring equipment
- Customer requirement reviews
- Supplier evaluations
- Nonconformities and corrective actions
- Internal audits and management reviews
ISO 9001 checklist: free download vs complete kit
A free checklist tells you what to check. It doesn't give you the documents that answer each question. Here is the difference.

|---|---|---|
| Questions | Short or generic list | 400+ questions by clause and department |
| Documents | Not included | Manual, procedures and SOPs |
| Records | Not included | 59 blank and 36 filled forms |
| Gap tracking | Manual | Compliance matrix in Excel |
| Support | None | Questions answered within 24 hours |

ISO 9001:2026 is here: update your checklist
ISO published ISO 9001:2026 on 16 September 2026, with a three-year transition for organizations certified to the 2015 edition. Read the official overview on the ISO website. Check that any ISO 9001 checklist you use is mapped to the edition you will be audited against.
ISO 9001 checklist: frequently asked questions
What is an ISO 9001 checklist?
An ISO 9001 checklist turns the requirements of clauses 4 to 10 into yes/no questions so you can see what your quality management system covers and what is missing before a certification audit.
Is there a free ISO 9001 checklist?
Free checklists exist and are useful for a first gap analysis. They usually list requirements without the documents and records that prove them, so you still have to write those yourself.
How many questions should an ISO 9001 checklist have?
The standard has no fixed number. A useful checklist covers every requirement in clauses 4 to 10 and splits questions by department. The ISO Gorilla kit includes more than 400 audit questions.
Can I use the checklist for my internal audit?
Yes. ISO 9001 requires internal audits, and a clause and department checklist is the usual tool. Record the results and close every finding before the certification audit.
Does a checklist guarantee ISO 9001 certification?
No. A checklist shows gaps, but certification depends on running the system and keeping records. Auditors assess both your documents and how you work.
