How to use ISO 27001 templates in five steps
Define scope and context
Decide which systems, locations and teams the ISMS covers, and who your interested parties are. The manual gives you the structure to record this.
Run your risk assessment

ISO 27001:2013 is no longer accepted
The transition to ISO/IEC 27001:2022 ended on 31 October 2025, so certificates are now issued against the 2022 edition. Its Annex A has 93 controls in four themes (organizational, people, physical and technological), down from 114 in 2013. If your documents still reference the old structure, update them before your audit.

Are ISO 27001 templates enough to get certified?
Templates cover the documentation, usually the biggest workload. Certification also depends on running the ISMS: assessing risk, applying controls, training people and keeping records. Auditors assess both.
Do I have to implement all 93 Annex A controls?
No. You select the controls that apply based on your risk assessment and justify any exclusions. The Statement of Applicability records those decisions.
Can small companies and startups use ISO 27001 templates?
